Our Philosophy

Stafford Railway Building Society (SRBS) was established in 1877 by a group of railway workers who wanted a means of saving and financing new homes for themselves. Initially based at the railway station, SRBS soon moved to the town centre where it has operated ever since.

For over 130 years SRBS has remained strongly committed to mutuality, providing a first class service to all members. It demonstrates this by treating all members alike and offering a number of product and service features which not only benefits its members, but also make SRBS stand out from its competitors.

Some of these unique features include:

  • SRBS is still Independent and locally managed. This means that its local knowledge is high, allowing it to take individual circumstances and situations into account when dealing with members.

  • SRBS believes that members are individuals. No two people are the same, so applications are not credit scored but assessed according to individual circumstances.

  • SRBS operates from a single office in the centre of Stafford. This means that overheads are low which is reflected in highly competitive interest rates. The Society is also free of any outside influence. In particular it does not sell life insurance, travel insurance, repayment vehicles etc, leaving it free to concentrate on making sure that members get the right mortgage or savings account for them.

  • The Society believes in a simple straightforward approach. This means no gimmicks, no special offers and no cash backs - just the highest quality of service at the lowest possible price. It also means SRBS can offer all of its services free of charge (with one or two rare exceptions – see the mortgage and savings tariffs for full details)

As a result, nearly a century of mergers, take-overs and floatations have passed SRBS by, leaving it still doing what it was established to do - offering sensible mortgages and investments, at sensible rates, to sensible people.
